:idea: When you start your private practice be prepared not to receive too many referals from your Russian colleagues, if you have any in the area. I have no idea what moves people to do what they do, but only few send you patients. The old addage - "share the wealth" does not click with Russians for some stupid reason. :cry:

I want to go into a private practice in a big city when I finish. Any big city has a sizable Russian population. Should I avoid them or attract them? I read this Forum for awile before registering, so I am not clear on what is best?

Any advise on that issue will be appreciated.

А как же объявления в русских газетах?
В районе Сиэттла многие "слышали" о группе врачей в Беллвью и мне кажется пациенты сами направляют своих знакомых и друзей к понравившимся врачам.
Я один раз по ошибке решила пойти к доктору фамилией Комарофф. Думала она русская, оказалась она была замужем за русским.
В принципе не принципиально кто ты - русский не русский, но при всех равных характеристиках я бы выбрала русского доктора из солидарности да и с оплатой у русских докторов ситуация выглядит честнее (сравнивая походы к американским врачам и моих друзей к русским).

That is so true! Don't they think about benefiting their patients? As a dietitian I prefer taking a multidiscipllinary approach to treating my patients. It is also more rewarding after all. It works nicely with diabetic and eating disorder patients where you cannot succeed without letting other professionals to step in, and without knowing what is being done on their part. Or is it just me, young and stupid?

I see everyone who comes in the door, regardless Russian or not, whether they can pay or not. Majority of the patients in my practice are not Russian, probably because I am outside of the area where the Russian population is the heaviest. Cleveland has estimated 50-70,000 Russians.

To tell you the truth - Russians are very difficult to care for - they are less trusting, tend not to do what you recommend, have less discipline when it comes to keeping appointments etc. In other words - they brought the old Soviet Union habits with them. Americans are easier.

Полностью согласен со всем вышесказанным - кроме вопроса об оплате (тут не должно быть никакой разницы - если только наши соотечественники-пациенты не пытаются быть умнее всех и избежать оплаты любыми способами)
А в целом я понимаю русскоязычных пациентов - те, кто постарше, предпочитают говорить с доктором напрямую, а не через переводчика, но потом почему-то не следуют рекомендациям и пытаются "домыслить" советы врача, базируясь при этом на советы телеведущих и друзей/соседей, и т.д. Те же, кто помладше, предпочитают ходить к американским врачам - по привычке не доверяя своим бывшим соотечественикам-врачам (по их мнению, поскольку в Союзе было ВСЁ плохо, включая обучение врачей, то нашим врачам доверять нельзя...)
Ну а русских врачей тоже нельзя не понять - если они будут своих пациентов направлять только к своим соотечественникам - то (теоретически) могут лишиться направлений от амерканцев - хотя в жизни я такого ещё не видел. Если есть друзья - то они своих пациентов к тебе всегда отправят, но русские не индусы - лояльности к своим соотечественникам-коллегам у них и в помине нет...
Есть, конечно, приятные исключения из обеих категорий, и я всё-таки предпочитаю русскоязычных пациентов (хотя их у меня менее 5%) - и при этом нередко раскаиваюсь о таком предпочтении...

I don't think Russians prefer American doctors mainly because they think Russian doctors don't have appropriate training. I think people are simply afraid to be cheated both moneywise and "healthwise" (such as undergoing unnecessary tests and procedures, or getting prescribed a certain drug because MD has a deal with the pharmaceutical company). Unfortunately, мне довелось встреть человека, которий бил художником в России, а здесь устроился на работу в один из русских оффисов как медицал ассистанце без всякого медитсинского образования. Ну подумаешь, он ничего такого не делал, он только кровь брал. Но ведь ему показали как ето делается! It's not that difficult after all. When hearing these stories and stories about medical offices closing because of things they do with billing you begin seriously thinking about seeing Russian doctors. For some reason, people expect Americans to be more law obedient and patient-friendly. Although, very often, this is not the case either. Look what is going on with bariatric surgeries - in some states dentists can do that. Not a big deal...
