RECOMMENDED WEBSITES :
The charge of the MLA Cancer Librarians Recommended Web Sites project is to provide medical librarians with a resource to use in their daily practice and teaching. VALENCIA - In the 26 years since Cris Embleton founded Healing the Children - a nonprofit organization that helps bring ailing children from Third World countries to the United States for medical treatment - more than 7,000 children have made that journey.
Since 1979, Embleton, a Valencia resident, has juggled responsibilities from arranging travel for sick children to finding doctors and nurses across the United States to volunteer their time and services.
Currently, there are nearly 20 foreign children in Southern California awaiting surgery or treatment or recovering from procedures who are here with the help of Healing the Children.
``We have a 10-year-old boy, Nestor, who is having brain surgery today,'' Embleton said Friday as she drove to the airport as part of another Healing the Children case. ``He's from Guatemala and he's had seizures all his life.
``The first time he was at my house he had a seizure. He hasn't been able to attend school because of (the seizures). This surgery is going to change his life,'' she said.
Four or five of the nearly 20 children currently in the Los Angeles area are staying with host families in the Santa Clarita Valley, Embleton said. John, 13, from the Philippines, has bone cancer and is scheduled to have his left leg amputated today.
Eight-year-old Joe, also from the Philippines, has a brain tumor that doctors have said will likely kill him. Another 8-year-old boy, this one from Mongolia, is recovering from surgery to correct his severely clubbed feet, Embleton said.

"The University of Minnesota is a world leader in UCB transplant research and Dr. John Wagner, the Scientific Director of Clinical Research for the University of Minnesota’s Blood and Marrow Transplant Program and Stem Cell Institute, is internationally recognized as a leader in the field.
If you want to change the world, start by changing the life of a child. Over the past few years, I have focused my philanthropic efforts on the research and treatment of pediatric cancer and blindness. This commitment is expressed in grants to national and international organizations all over the world. My mission is simply stated: reduce the incidence of childhood blindness in third world countries, and expand the number and reach of cancer detection and treatment programs for children.
This mission has led to my involvement in Camp Okizu and the Seva Child Vision Campaign. These outstanding programs are comprised of passionate people committed to addressing the critical needs of young people. By inspiring communities, states and nations, by motivating individuals and organizations, by equipping local leaders with programs and facilities, we will make a difference in the lives of millions of children.
We live in an exciting time of discovery. New treatments and technologies that offer tremendous promise are within our reach. Stem cell research for example, offers tremendous potential to treat disease and disorders that today, have no current therapies or at best, partially effective ones. Programs contributing to the progress of this research are the prologue to an era of medical discovery of cell-based therapies. One day these therapies will restore the promise of full lives to those children whose lives today are truncated by critical illness.
Philanthropy is a business in which we are CFOs for God. A responsible approach, balanced with passionate desire to change the world for the better is a worthy endeavor, not only for the wealthy, but for all who take up the challenge of making a difference. We choose these organizations to be recipients of grants including pediatric hospitals, clinics and other organizations dedicated to the early detection and treatment of cancer and blindness in children."
